The Greater Egypt Regional Planning and Development Commission (Greater Egypt) is supporting efforts to develop Comprehensive Safety Action Plans (CSAP) for the Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Perry, and Williamson County region. Each CSAP is aimed at reducing and eliminating serious-injury and fatal crashes affecting all roadway users on all public roads. The Southern Illinois Metropolitan Planning Organization (SIMPO) CSAP will include the Carbondale-Murphysboro- Marion- Carterville-Herrin Urbanized area within Jackson and Williamson Counties.

Key safety stakeholders have been selected to serve as a member of the safety committee due to the significant role they and/or their agency/organization have with improving traffic safety and ultimately, reducing traffic-related fatalities and injuries. The safety committee will include representatives of engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency medical services. By serving on the safety committee, they will help ensure that we reach all stakeholders in the Greater Egypt-SIMPO region and better understand their safety concerns and challenges.  Additionally, outreach efforts to stakeholders within the SIMPO area will be able to take part in safety surveys during the plan process.

The SIMPO CSAP, along with several other CSAPs throughout the state, is being funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The plans will be developed in accordance with the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) funding program, making SIMPO, the counties, and various local agencies eligible for future funding through the SS4A and other state and federal funding programs. The plan will be developed with the leadership of a consultant team alongside Greater Egypt, the safety committee, and a broader group of stakeholders.
